Parshas Lech Lecha

THIS WEEK'S D'VAR TORAH SHOULD GIVE THE NISHAMA OF,
MIRIAM GITAL BAS AVIGDOR
AN ALIYA!

Hi everyone, I hope this helps you go into your Shabbos more prepared and I hope you learn something new!

This week's Parsha is called Parshas Lech Lecha (LE-CH LI-CHUH.) In this week's Parsha Hashem (G-d) tells Avraham or Abraham in the first passuk, "Lech Lecha Ma'artzecha" (Go for yourself from your land.) Rabbeinu Shlomo Yitzchaki or Rashi says that when Hashem said "LICHA" for you or for yourself, means literally for your own benefit and good.

Rashi asks then, what is this benefit and good Avraham will derive from leaving his home land to go to a strange land that G-d told him to go to? The following passuk answers the question with, "And there I, Hashem, will make you into a great nation... for here you will not merit to have any children, but there you will merit to. And there you will become famous, but here you will not.

When Hashem tells Avraham to "Go for you," Hashem never actually tells Avraham specifically where Hashem wants him to go. The reason for this can be answered through a mushul (brief story.)

There was once a father, we'll call him Yosef. So Yosef had only one child that was about seven or eight years old. And one summer day this little boy was at home waiting for his totte (yiddish for "father") to come home from work. When his father arrived, his father said, "Hey Moishy, I've got a BIG surprise for you after dinner tonight. We are going to go somewhere really special!" Now you can only imagine how excited little Moishy is right now. So after dinner, just as his father told him they went into to the car and started driving. In the car little Moishy was so ecxited, and before he knew it they were pulling into the parking lot of Toys R Us. And as they got out of the car, Yosef said, "All right we're here!"

Now, Hashem did the same thing with Avraham, Hashem said to him, "Avraham, go for you.... to the land that I tell you." Hashem specifically didn't tell Avraham where he wanted him to go and this was to keep Avraham in suspense, test his loyalty, and in doing so, He (Hashem) made Eretz Yisroel (Israel) more beloved in Avraham's eyes when he got there.

May we all merit to have faith in Hashem like Avraham did and follow in his ways
the way he followed in Hashem's! - Amen!

HAVE A GREAT SHABBOS AND WEEKEND!
Stay tuned for next week’s Parsha called, Parshas Va’yara (VAH-Y-AIR-UH).
